Threaded Roots
Category: Interior
‘Threaded Roots’ is a textile project by Nancy Housego that celebrates slow, sustainable making, inspired by her family’s heritage in farming. The work began after she discovered hand-spun yarns made by her great-grandmother on a smallholding in Kent. This sparked research into her family’s history of land management in their rural hamlet, and later, hands-on experience at Fernhill Farm, where Nancy learnt to process raw wool from start to finish—washing, carding, hand-spinning, naturally dyeing, and finally knitting and crocheting each piece by hand. She created over 50 handspun yarns, many dyed with natural materials such as madder, onion skins, and avocado pips, resulting in earthy, biodegradable textiles. Every stage of the process follows a closed-loop system: nothing wasted, everything traceable, ethical, and designed to one day return to the earth. The finished collection is a tactile series of interior pieces—cushions, wall hangings and blankets—bringing calm, texture, and consciousness into the home.
