Ice Nocturne

My project explores the Arctic Circle and the surface of the Moon. At first glance, these are distant and unrelated realms, yet they share notable similarities: the connection between them serves as the inspiration for the project. Despite their clear differences, I found parallels in the sense of emptiness, coldness, and alienation they evoke, as well as in their vast landscapes, which create an almost blurred boundary between reality and imagination. Glaciers and lunar terrain share textures that embody layers, erosion, and geological memory, carrying a sense of distance from everyday experience. The Arctic Circle and the Moon’s surface remain only partially explored, evoking fear as well as curiosity and attraction. Culturally, these spaces are often romanticized as places of exploration and discovery: where reality and imagination meet, where achievement and failure coexist, and where the sublime, the divine, and a sense of eternity are present. Throughout the project, I examined visual representations of these two environments and the fine arts inspired by them. Images from space missions intertwine with breathtaking nature photography; hyper-realistic oil paintings appear alongside glass and papier-mâché sculptures; metal designs merge with crafted objects. Together, these elements form a menswear Fall/Winter collection characterized by a light color palette and silhouettes that shift between defined and blurred, rigid and soft, and between layers and textures. The project engages with natural elements, and therefore the use of natural fabrics felt most appropriate. The design elements expressed in the final garment focus on oversized and undefined silhouettes, a delicate color palette, layered dressing, contrasts between hard and soft, and between presence and dissolution. Mother-of-pearl buttons subtly reference the glow of the Moon, while the glacier-inspired print echoes layers of ice. The choice of materials was made in relation to the natural source of inspiration and the inherent qualities of the fabrics. Soft tones and clear yet dynamic silhouettes are made possible through the material properties. Cotton and wool, which blend so naturally, allow the system to remain within the boundaries of a fashion garment while simultaneously enabling the existence of a flexible, imaginative space. The photographs tell a story that moves between reality and imagination, between the natural and the artificial, between stability and fragility. The garment gains a new dimension within an almost cosmic world reminiscent of the Moon, and its movement reveals different angles and new forms inspired by the lunar landscape.
