Freddie Side Table
Category: Furniture
The Freddie Side Table is a sculptural, small-scale furniture piece that celebrates the natural beauty and diversity of solid timber. It explores how varying wood tones and grains can be used expressively, while remaining functional, sustainable, and timeless. At its core is a column made from a series of hand-turned timber spheres. Each sphere is crafted from a different hardwood: ash, maple, cherry, red oak, white oak, brown oak, and walnut, arranged in gradients that move from light to dark or dark to light. These tonal shifts create rhythm and contrast, highlighting the individual character of each species. Single timber versions are also available for a more cohesive, understated look. Designed in collaboration with Benchmark, a British furniture company known for its commitment to sustainability, the table uses only responsibly sourced hardwoods. While much of Benchmark’s timber is UK-grown, they also work with trusted international suppliers, recognising that sourcing locally is not always the most sustainable option. All materials for this project were provided free of charge in support of the design. The table is made using a combination of CNC machining for clean lines and traditional hand-turning techniques to add warmth and tactility. A concealed metal rod adds strength, and a natural Osmo oil finish protects the surface while enhancing the grain without introducing harmful chemicals. The Freddie Side Table demonstrates how natural materials can be both bold and refined. It offers a strong visual identity while remaining rooted in environmental responsibility and enduring craftsmanship. Freddie Side Table: Embracing the Grain, Celebrating the Timber
