Beyond the Window

Beyond the Window is a hand woven textile collection developed through conversations and creative engagement with older adults living with dementia. The project explores how natural materials, colour and texture can support emotional connection, sensory engagement and reminiscence. Inspired by participants' descriptions of gardens and outdoor spaces viewed from their windows, the collection translates personal memories into contemporary woven textiles. British wool forms the foundation of the work, chosen for its sustainability, traceability and status as a valuable natural resource readily available within the UK. Silk and mohair were incorporated to introduce contrasting tactile and visual qualities, creating textiles that encourage touch and interaction. All yarns were hand dyed to develop carefully considered colour palettes informed by participant responses. Through weaving, the project demonstrates how natural fibres can be used to create meaningful, high-quality textiles that support wellbeing while celebrating sustainable material choices. Beyond the Window also challenges assumptions surrounding design for older generations. As populations continue to age, there is increasing need for thoughtfully designed products that prioritise beauty, dignity and sensory experience. The collection advocates for the use of premium natural materials in this context, recognising that older adults deserve the same quality, creativity and innovation afforded to other consumer groups.
