CHITRAKARI – Odisha Artistry Fusion Table
Category: Furniture
CHITRAKARI is a handcrafted center table that reinterprets Odisha's centuries-old Pattachitra art in a contemporary functional object. Traditionally painted on cloth or dried palm leaves (paata), this sacred storytelling art—often used to depict deities—has been thoughtfully adapted on wood, with deep respect for its origins. Instead of divine depictions, the table top features an Odissi dance composition, capturing the grace of the tribhangi posture, a pose central to both Pattachitra and the classical dance form. The painting sits in a vivid village landscape, paying homage to Odisha’s rural roots while celebrating its performative heritage. The table’s edges are hand-carved with traditional Bael borders, symbolizing flora and fauna — motifs intrinsic to Pattachitra's frame narrative. Every aspect—from the use of sustainable, locally sourced teak wood to the natural stone-based pigments—speaks of an eco-conscious and ethical design approach. Executed in collaboration with artisans from Pipili village, known for their mastery in traditional crafts, CHITRAKARI is not just a piece of furniture. It is a living canvas, a cultural artefact, and a tribute to the evolving yet enduring artistry of Odisha.
