This project was one of the collections I designed as part of my graduation project in 2022. It is a dining/tableware accessory collection for Hotels and restaurants inspired by the Bauhaus Art Movement. The geometric shapes in the Bauhaus paintings reminded me of the traditional basket-making handicraft from Northeast India, so I collaborated with the cane artisans from Assam to make these products. Cane is not only a natural, sustainable and durable material, but it also makes for a timeless piece. The sourcing of this cane and a few bamboo strips used in one of the trays is done by the artisans themselves. While I took the time to learn the basics of traditional cane and bamboo weaving, I hold deep respect for the artisans whose skills have been refined over generations. Their expertise was integral to bringing this collection to life. My aim with this project was not only to respond to the design brief but also to push the boundaries of traditional basket-making by exploring unconventional shapes, varied scales, and potential new techniques.
