NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

Hello! I’m Naveena Moorthy, a designer currently pursuing Furniture and Interior Design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. I recently completed an exchange semester at the Glasgow School of Art, where I explored design across cultures, materials, and mindsets. My work spans furniture, interiors, and objects , often starting with something deeply personal and evolving into functional solutions. Growing up in Bangalore has made me adaptable, and my journey through India and Scotland has shaped how I connect with spaces and people. My work gives me the opportunity to collaborate with artisans, and my time abroad has widened my perspective on craft, material innovation, and design systems. Throughout my academic journey, I’ve worked with two professional studios and prototyped a folding furniture piece for Indian Railways. Along the way, I’ve developed a love for digital tools like Unreal Engine and picked up video editing, which led to the launch of my travel vlog BrewedChapters during my exchange. I also run a small handmade business called Tiny Tangles, where I explore macramé. Design, for me, is a way of building experiences. I love questioning the things around me and often incorporate those ideas into my work.

Thunai

Category: Furniture

Competitions: Home Competition 2025

This folding laptop stand, named Thunai , which means companion in Tamil , is designed to be a reliable and thoughtful partner in your everyday work setup. Made from bamboo, it combines lightweight strength, a warm natural finish, and sustainable values. Thunai is built for flexibility and ease. It folds flat when not in use, making it ideal for students and professionals constantly shifting between home, studios, or cafés. Designed for both sitting and standing heights, it offers short-duration ergonomic comfort by lifting your laptop to a better eye level , helping improve posture while freeing up valuable desk space, contributing to a quick workspace. One of the key features of Thunai is its telescopic mechanism, built by using the natural hollowness of bamboo. Instead of relying on complex joinery or metal parts, the form itself becomes functional. The stand extends smoothly to the desired height and locks in place with minimal hardware, keeping the design simple and efficient. Its structure is also designed with portability in mind. An attachment allows the folded stand to be secured alongside your laptop bag , perfect for when you're on the move and want to carry both together without the bulk. It is made from leather the has been carefully resourced and exsisting scraop from letaher workers were used to make smaller pieces of the bag. Therefore efficiently using material. The flat legs help pull the stand closer to you, regardless of where you're sitting, adding to its user-friendly nature. Just like its name suggests, Thunai isn’t just a tool — it’s a quiet, functional companion that supports you wherever you go.
