Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of raw rattan, with an estimated annual supply of approximately 85% of the raw rattan used by the rattan industry worldwide originating from Indonesia. Of this amount, 90% of rattan is sourced from the tropical forests of Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Rattan is considered an environmentally friendly raw material, and as a result, products derived from the rattan industry are also directly associated with being environmentally friendly or “green products.” Rattan plants have been well-known in Indonesian society for a considerable amount of time, and they have long served as a raw material for various handicrafts and furniture industries within the country. Indonesia’s rich biodiversity and favorable climate contribute to the abundance of rattan species, making it a valuable resource for the furniture and handicraft industries. The lightweight and durable nature of rattan make it a popular material for crafting various products, ranging from furniture to baskets and decorative items. Despite facing challenges such as deforestation and unsustainable harvesting practices, efforts are being made to promote responsible rattan cultivation and trade, ensuring the conservation of natural resources and the long-term sustainability of the rattan industry in Indonesia.
