Last week Only Natural reached an important milestone in its evolution as an international movement for natural materials, presenting its first exhibition outside the United Kingdom at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.

Hosted as part of Material Matters Copenhagen, and hosted in the beautiful Ukraine House in Gammal Dok, Only Natural showcased a curated selection of previous competition winning designs at one of Europe’s most influential design festivals. This provided an incredible opportunity to place emerging talent and natural materials at the heart of international design conversations.

Over three days, thousands of attendees from across the global design industry visited Copenhagen to explore exhibitions, installations and events taking place throughout the city. With its central themes of sustainability, craftsmanship and material innovation, Material Matters Copenhagen provided a perfect platform for Only Natural’s growing mission.

Our capsule collection of shortlisted and winning projects from previous Only Natural competitions featured furniture crafted with bamboo and cherry wood, apparel developed using wool and vases born from biomaterial innovation. Collectively these projects demonstrated the remarkable diversity of natural materials and the role they can play in shaping the future of design.

For many show visitors, Only Natural offered a unique opportunity to engage directly with young designers who are challenging conventional approaches to materials and production and focusing on designs that prioritise durability, responsible material selection and long-term value.

Our  Copenhagen showcase represented an important step in Only Natural’s wider ambition to expand conversations around natural materials beyond the competition itself.

Since its launch, Only Natural has sought to encourage designers, educators and industry professionals to reconsider the materials that underpin the products and spaces around us. Through its international student competition, educational outreach and growing content programme, the movement continues to promote greater awareness of natural fibres and their potential to offer alternatives to synthetic, oil-derived materials.

The relevance of these conversations was evident throughout 3daysofdesign. Across exhibitions, talks and installations, designers repeatedly returned to themes of material transparency, circularity, longevity and environmental responsibility. While approaches varied, a common thread emerged: a recognition that material choice is becoming one of the most important decisions designers make.

As demand grows for products that are more durable, repairable and environmentally responsible, natural materials are increasingly being recognised not simply as sustainable alternatives but as materials capable of delivering beauty, performance and longevity in their own right.

For Only Natural, this wider context simply reinforces the importance of our mission.
