Sam Bird Smith was awarded the Only Natural Home Interiors Winner and was announced as the Overall Winner of the Home Competition.

Sam is a Product & Furniture Design student at Nottingham Trent University, where he creates products that are simple, reliable, high quality and sustainable. His interests are rooted in discovering new, experimental materials and processes, and implementing these as replacements for current unsustainable production chains.

Sam’s winning design, Phyto, is a hanging pendant light made from 3D printed algae-based bioplastic. The shapes of Sam’s lamps are inspired by the appearance of algae under a microscope to pay homage to the origin of the material. The aim of Phyto was to not only create a functioning and attractive light fixture but, more importantly, to showcase the material and draw attention to innovative, sustainable design practices.
