Beauty Within the Ugly

Category: Apparel

"Beauty within the Ugly" is a project that explores the often overlooked elegance in natural processes such as decomposition. The project is pinned around the notion that "everything that comes from the Earth will return to it," and delves into the decomposition aspects of the nitrogen cycle, capturing the essence of decay to foster a greater appreciation for this intrinsic life process. Initial imagery focuses on the intricate and fascinating details of mould, transforming something typically seen as disgusting into a subject of intrigue. The collection exclusively uses natural fabrics like silks, cottons, and linens which are dyed and printed with only food waste products and adorned with bioplastic embellishments. To support the concept, a biodegradability study was conducted by burying the materials in a garden and observing their decomposition over six weeks. This project not only highlights the aesthetic potential of decay but is also an entirely circular design collection.
