Vanyā

Category: Accessories

Vanyā, meaning "born of the forest" in Sanskrit, is a contemporary bamboo bag that celebrates the enduring relationship between nature, traditional craftsmanship, and purposeful design. Inspired by bamboo's remarkable strength, flexibility, versatility, rapid renewability, and timeless appeal, the project explores how this extraordinary natural material can be reimagined for contemporary lifestyles. More than a sustainable resource, bamboo represents resilience, adaptability, and harmony with nature, making it an ideal medium for responsible and circular product design. Developed in collaboration with skilled bamboo artisans in Pune, India, originally from Assam, the project began with an immersive learning journey into bamboo species, sustainable harvesting, material behaviour, processing techniques, and handcrafted joinery. Working alongside the artisans transformed generations of traditional knowledge into an integral part of the design process. Vanyā features a lightweight, rollable structure crafted from bamboo strips, handcrafted bamboo joinery, natural jute straps, and an attached cotton inner pouch. Composed entirely of renewable and biodegradable materials, the design minimises material use while maximising durability and longevity. Designed to open fully while remaining upright for effortless access, Vanyā demonstrates how indigenous craftsmanship can be thoughtfully adapted for modern living. More than a bag, it is a tribute to nature, cultural heritage, and mindful design, celebrating renewable materials through a timeless and functional everyday product.
