Second

The collection “Second” reflects transformation and rebirth – it is a story of things that have been given new life. Each piece in this collection carries the past within it while being reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. One autumn day, I listened to estonian broadcast where Ave Matsin spoke about how heritage can heal. She recalled estonian textile artist Anu Raud’s inquiry to the veterinary office after an incident where one of her diligent neighbors had complained about a dreadful home slaughter – sheep had been killed. In the response, it was stated: “In a sensible household, everything that comes from the animal is used.” That sentence lingered in my mind. It made me question my own creative process: What do I throw away, and what do I keep? I began to consciously save even the smallest thread ends and fabric scraps, realizing that in my studio, I am like a housekeeper – someone who must use materials wisely and respectfully. The lack of knitting machine I tried to find a new way how to construct garments. s. From the storage boxes peeked a large number of early knitting experiments that had been left unused, and I decided to give them purpose. That was the moment I discovered wet felting – a technique that allowed me to create interesting textures by making use of existing materials: bits of thread, knitting samples, fabric scarps, wool, and more. These materials, once fading into forgiveness, have now found their place. Sheep’s wool, often perceived as coarse and scratchy, has been transformed through wet felting into something soft and delicate. “Second” is not just something new – it is something carried forward in time, a testament to the idea that everything can have its place.
