This writing case is an accessory designed to intrigue and inspire. It is part of a larger collection where the intrigue comes from the combination of materials, mechanisms, spaces, sensory stimuli and the origin and meaning of the imagery that is featured in the stationery and accompanying prints. These images are unique to each case and are produced as part of the process of cutting a finger-groove into the back stretcher. The aim is to create a sense of occasion and a frame of mind to inspire the writing of something thoughtful and significant, be it an insight, an idea, or a personal, political or diplomatic communication. This example of my work is made entirely from natural materials. There is no metal or plastic and even the fastenings and the clasp are made from wood. The whole thing is held together with wooden tenons, hide glue and linen thread. It is finished with a mix of linseed oil and beeswax. I have been making things for as long as I can remember. Until recently, I pursued my interests in art and craft without any formal training and alongside an unrelated academic career. Rather late in the day, I came to realise that I needed to improve my design skills and that was when I enrolled in the Master of Arts degree in 3D Design at Leeds Beckett University here in the UK. The course has been fantastic. I have particularly enjoyed working with staff and students who specialise in graphics, fashion and fine art as well as all aspects of design. They have each had an influence on my work and I am grateful to them all.
