Sources estimate that 45% of flowers handled by the floral industry die before being sold. I have witnessed firsthand the large volumes of this waste material in London: supermarkets discard out of date flowers, while public gardens generate substantial quantities of pruning waste that is typically composted or burned. This biomass represents an underutilized material resource with architectural potential. My name is Olivia Webb, and over the past year I have dedicated my practice to collecting floral waste and researching how it can be treated with the same care we attach to the flowers themselves. My project, ‘Made with Love’ proposes a regenerative interior architectural building system using floriculture byproducts. The project adopts a nose-to-tail approach that assigns each part of the plant a specific architectural function. Stems become structural frameworks and joinery elements, petals and leaves are processed into composite surfaces and infill materials, and harvested thorns are reused as mechanical fixing devices. The research has produced a modular system of 3D printed bio-resin nodes, rose-fibre panels, composite material samples, and structural prototypes that investigate alternative approaches to interior construction using locally available floral waste streams. Through open-source testing, the cultivation, fabrication, maintenance, and replacement of each component is recorded. Ultimately, 'Made with Love; proposes an interior architecture system founded on cultivation and repair, where communities can transform local floriculture waste into building materials that respond to their own environmental and cultural contexts.
