SONWÊRELD is the product of two brands, Vallèe Noire, an African agriculture-focused brand, and DIJÁGO Studios co-founded with Khudija Zaib. This collection is informed by Afrofuturism, materialised through the lens of agriculture. For me, Afrofuturism means evaluating the past to inform the future in order to create better earth conditions, as well as multiple identities of being for Black and African people.‪ ‬ ‪In Sonwêreld, I used only natural fibres and natural botanical dyes & eco-pigment inks. Fabrics used were pure hemp, hemp denim, organic cotton, regenerative cotton, regenerative wool and hemp linen, which were all sustainably & ethically sourced with 100% Traceability. Natural indigo(w/ alum mordant), Red onions(w/ iron water), cutch (w/ iron water) & eucalyptus were the natural dyes I used on pure hemp and hemp/cotton blends materials. Our garments & accessories are all biodegradable and cause no harm to the soil and our water streams. This look consists of 100% regenerative cotton grown from seed in Zambia in collaboration with Textile artist Lara Lopez. Trousers are 55%Hemp 45%Cotton Light Canvas in a Balloon silhouette with Digital Eco-pigment printed textile. The regenerative Cotton Crochet Tank top was in collaboration with Ujjal & the Regenerative Crochet Hat with Samriti. The Cotton Silk blend Belt was made by DIJÁGO artisans and our Pure Copper was sourced ethically from Zambia with the Arm Cuff sculpted by David tau. At the feet we have our Handmade Chappals made from recycled car tyres & offcut leather by artisan shoe makers in Pakistan. This collection was a proof of concept & an expansion of my Regenerative fashion journey to show that what we wear can make a difference, and to inspire the wider community to be part of the paths toward protecting and restoring our environment.
