Abstract Depleted Terrain

Abstract Depleted Terrain explores the distance that has emerged between nature and the objects that surround us. The project is inspired by Edward Burtynsky's photographs of extraction landscapes, which reveal the scale of human intervention in the natural world and the lasting traces it leaves on the landscape. From this came a simple observation: every material carries the memory of its origin. Before becoming a textile, garment, or accessory, it was part of a natural landscape shaped by extraction, processing, and human intervention. The submitted look is part of this collection and expresses its central ideas. The skirt combines leather and mohair wool to recreate the appearance of a sheep at the moment of shearing, the moment when a natural material begins its journey from a living animal to an object. The contrast between the structured leather and the soft tufted mohair recalls the shared origin of both materials, inviting the viewer to reflect on how natural resources are transformed through human intervention before becoming the objects we wear. The oversized leather jacket draws inspiration from Richard Serra's monumental rusted steel sculptures. Its sculptural volume expresses the immense scale and dominant presence of industry, a force that encloses nature and places the human body in the presence of something far greater than itself. From this tension emerges a visual language that moves between sculptural form and softness, strength and fragility. Rather than portraying environmental destruction directly, I chose to use beauty, materiality, and luxury to draw the viewer in, only then revealing the complexity behind them. The collection proposes a quieter understanding of luxury rooted in longevity, craftsmanship, and intention. By encouraging a more conscious and respectful relationship with natural materials, it suggests that beauty and responsibility can exist together.
