NiYugto Lighting Fixtures

Category: Interior

In Teresa, Rizal, the only coconet weaving community in the Philippines transforms coconut fiber into sustainable, eco-friendly products. This undergraduate thesis project, developed by a Drafting Technology student, introduces innovative lighting fixtures crafted entirely from coconet, a natural and biodegradable material derived from coconut husks. By leveraging the strength, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal of coconet, these fixtures showcase Filipino craftsmanship while promoting environmental sustainability. The project aims to empower the coconet weaving community, whose artisans earn an average of PHP 250 per day—an income insufficient to meet rising living costs due to inflation. By diversifying their product line with high-value lighting fixtures, this initiative creates new market opportunities, enhancing the community’s financial stability. The designs, ranging from pendant lights to chandeliers, appeal to eco-conscious consumers and supporters of natural materials. Rooted in the principles of a circular economy, the project repurposes coconut husks that are often discarded, reducing waste and environmental pollution. Each fixture is handmade and ensuring zero reliance on synthetic materials. Through technical drafting expertise, the project optimizes coconet’s potential, offering a scalable model for sustainable design and community development in Teresa, Rizal.
