Monica Nikolov

Otis College of Art and Design

Hello! My name is Monica Nikolov and I am currently a rising senior at Otis College of Art and Design with a major in fashion design. I specialize in street wear and evening wear. I also love to make bags and purses. My most current design project was with the brand Wilson in which I made an on court look as well as a tennis bag. Thank you for reading this!

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Fashion Competition 2026

My project is for the Only Natural Fashion Competition 2026, and I am submitting in the accessories category. My bag is made out of used jeans that I no longer wear, and it is 100% cotton. With this project I wanted to rethink the way I approach design and purchasing materials, as there is no need to waste materials which I already have on hand. It is not about purchasing materials, it is about learning to design and create with what you have on hand and learning to turn clothes into accessories. I also wanted my bag to have more than one use, so I made my bag reversible with inside pockets on both sides of the bag. I created this bag with the intent of being sustainable, stylish, and multifunctional. The bag features closures with pull strings which I also made out of the jeans. I created a channel on the inside of the bag where two strings can move through the bag and come out to be pulled and tied, which then closes the bag. There are string closures on both sides of the bag, so whichever way the customer chooses to wear the bag, the bag will be able to be closed from both the inside and the outside of the bag. I decided to make a string closure instead of a zipper or metal snaps because I wanted to challenge myself with this project by making a bag that does not need any metal materials in order for it to close. Thank you so much for reading this, and I hope you enjoy my project!
