Siang-Ying Lu

SAIC School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Siang-Ying Lu is a Taiwanese designer and artist working at the intersection of fashion, body, and spatial installation. Her practice often provides a performative and playful atmosphere, creating immersive environments that invite collective engagement. Originally trained in Drama and Theatre with a specialization in costume design, Lu’s creative vision is deeply informed by theatrical collaborative practices and audience involvement. These foundations inspire her to expand the definition of a garment—transforming it from a wearable object into a tangible extension of human existence and worldly experience. Navigating the tensions, desires, and relational dynamics inherent in surviving contemporary society, she works with bold colors and expressive scales to give form to humanity's unspoken mental landscapes. Lu is currently an MFA candidate in the Fashion, Body, and Garment program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“... (a playground is) something that can form community and make the city a better place, and no matter adults or children, the sense and movement of the body replace just seeing.” —— Isamu Noguchi This project draws inspiration from Isamu Noguchi’s playgrounds, landscapes disguised as sculptural curves that guide the body before the mind fully understands. Honoring these bodily instincts, I allowed my creative process to be guided by tactile exploration and pure intuition, forming a unique conversation between my hands and the elastic, tender texture of leather. Beginning with a single circle cut from a piece of leftover leather, I constructed a series of parallel and concentric lines by subtly folding and sewing the material directly, without making any additional cuts. Driven by the leather's inherent elasticity and stretch, the initially flat surface naturally organic shifted into a three-dimensional, undulating silhouette, mimicking a living landscape. When the human body interacts with the piece, these sculptural shapes respond and adapt, allowing the final form of the bag to crystallize. Rather than framing this as a rigid process of "making and prototyping," I define it as an act of play: I played with the material, and the material plays with the body. Depending on how it is held and engaged with, this fluid leather object constantly shifts, presenting multiple silhouettes that mirror the wearer’s shifting moods and expressions.
