Silk Umbrella · Nature Reconnected

Category: Apparel

Competitions: Fashion Competition 2026

Project Name: Silk Umbrella: A Bond Renewed with Nature This collection takes Jiangnan oil-paper umbrellas, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage, and the classic Wu Opera Legend of the White Snake as dual creative sources, adopting eco-friendly natural materials throughout the design. Oil-paper umbrellas are handcrafted from bamboo, silk, plant wax and other natural raw materials, embodying the oriental philosophy that everything originates from nature and returns to nature, which lies at the heart of sustainable fashion. The classic scene of misty Jiangnan and oil-paper umbrella encounter in Wu Opera sets a soft, hazy visual tone for the whole series. The design absorbs the supporting structure of umbrella ribs and the waterproof feature of tung oil silk, translating them into layered three-dimensional outdoor silhouettes to create windproof and waterproof multi-layer functional outfits. All fabrics of the series are fully biodegradable natural fibers including organic cotton, linen and tussah silk. Combined with plant-wax waterproof coating and plant dyeing techniques, the design cuts down chemical pollution from the source. Modular detachable structures support multiple matching styles for one garment and extend its service life. Zero-waste pattern cutting effectively reduces material loss during garment production. Combining traditional oriental craft aesthetics, the classical artistic conception of Wu Opera and practical demands of modern outdoor wear, the work transforms oil-paper umbrella and traditional opera culture into sustainable daily garments. It integrates traditional cultural heritage, natural fabrics and eco-friendly clothing systems, conveying a design philosophy of revering nature and circular coexistence.
