Vidushi Chenna

The Royal College of Art

Textile Design MA / MFA

Vidushi Chenna belongs to a weaving community in India. But, due to industrialisation during British colonisation, her ancestors stopped the practice of hand weaving to move into working for power loom mills. This slowly drifted into other professions as the mills got shut over time. This sparked her interest in pursuing textiles. Her work is influenced by local and sustainable community practices, philosophies and storytelling. Vidushi's expertise extends from innovative material science to grassroots community interventions, with a strong focus on collaboration to tackle emerging challenges. With a foundation in textile techniques, she incorporates ancient art forms into contemporary concepts and narratives that challenge ethical and environmental concerns. Her practice involves research into value chains and developing sustainable solutions using natural and agricultural materials. She brings a unique perspective on colour and material trends, promoting regenerative cultures and circular living. She holds a Master's in Textiles from the Royal College of Art, having previously completed her Bachelor's at the National Institute of Design, India.

Due to industrialisation during British colonisation, my ancestors stopped the practice of hand weaving to move into working for power loom mills. This slowly drifted into other professions as the mills got shut over time. Investigated the shift to power loom, considering the importance of history, environmental and sustainable practices, reviving the relevance of handloom practices for these local crafts and places' social, cultural and heritage. Can Cotton and clay evolve as materials together? In continuation of my practice with traditional materials, In this project, 'My Land of Cotton' I experimented with indigenous knowledge about the two most primitive materials clay and cotton, its agricultural practices and their interrelation and evolution over time in a cultural context. The story they can convey together through weaves, textile and material applications in interior spaces. https://2023.rca.ac.uk/students/vidushi-chenna/ https://youtu.be/ugMWEBavC6c?si=R1fjadLdDXIHI78L
