NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

Hello! I'm a designer based in Bangalore, India, with a profound fascination for the role of culture in design. My creative journey is enriched by the culturally diverse environment that surrounds me. As a designer, I am on a constant quest to reimagine daily experiences and create intentional, 'fun' and meaningful experiences through design. I am also on the quest to learn and explore ‘something new’ which is my motivation. I believe in 'play' as an integral aspect of design and strive to bring that in what I do in the form of experiences. I have a keen interest in working with materials and pushing the boundaries of their properties. Currently I'm working on exploring 'play' as a necessary factor in different areas of life- like education, interiors, and more.

Spice Maracas

The project began with a simple question: Can the everyday be reimagined? Salt and pepper, perhaps the most mundane part of the table, posed an opportunity to transform a routine act into something tactile, playful, and joyful. Spice Maracas reimagines two familiar forms- maracas and salt & pepper shakers, into a sensory experience that invites play at the table. The interaction is simple: 'pop, fill, shake'. A satisfying pop as you open the snug-fitting handle, an easy refill, and a rhythmic shake to season your food. The design includes a carefully considered ergonomic handle, perfectly balanced by the weight of the body to enable a smooth, satisfying shaking experience. A subtle engraved symbol on the handle allows for easy distinction between salt and pepper, especially helpful for visually impaired users. Each piece was shaped using precise lathe work by hand, with care taken to ensure that both shakers are perfectly identical. The interior cavity was delicately turned using custom tools to achieve a smooth inner curve. Different hole sizes accommodate the flow of salt and pepper, and each was tangentially drilled to ensure smooth dispersion while maintaining the surface continuity. It’s an object that brings the spirit of play into a daily ritual, turning a habitual motion into a shared, almost musical experience- where craft, care, and curiosity come together.
