Maddie Calthrop

Nottingham Trent University

My name is Maddie Calthrop. I have just completed my second year studying Furniture and Product Design at Nottingham Trent University, and I am about to start a placement year in industry. The way I design and my ethos are heavily influenced by my learning and are constantly evolving as I get the opportunity to use new materials and processes. However, sustainability is always a top consideration for me. I believe it is vital for designers to take responsibility for our designs, not only from an environmental standpoint but also regarding social and economic impacts. Therefore, I strive to consider each choice I make to create designs that are not only aesthetic and functional but also positive.

Baa Stood - Felting in Upholstery

Category: Furniture

Competitions: Home Competition 2025

In my project, I focused on creating a sustainable approach to upholstery by prioritising reusability, recyclability, and repairability. I utilised 3D felting to minimise waste and reduce the need for adhesives. My prototype was a simple three-legged stool made from scrap timber, but I envision the final version using British ash to raise awareness about ash dieback. The felt cover was crafted from British sheep's wool, a biodegradable and often underutilised material, featuring natural properties like water resistance and fire retardance. The cover acted as padding, adding comfort to the seat. I used natural dyes, primarily turmeric, alongside beetroot and onion skins to enhance the aesthetic while remaining environmentally friendly. Repairability was a key aspect of my design, allowing users to easily replace or repair the removable felt cover, with a felting tool cleverly hidden in one of the legs. Overall, my project showcases the potential of natural materials in sustainable design.
