Cardiff Metropolitan University

I am currently a textile design student at Cardiff Metropolitan University. my design process is heavily lead by collaging, making, deconstructing and reconstructing. I work using hand weaving and hand embroidery with a focus on traditional and heritage techniques. I intentionally work with natural fibres, specifically wool, in all my projects and for this project I naturally dyed my fibres. My project was inspired by the mythology of the Isle of Mann, my family connections to the island as well as personal memories of it.

Inspired by the mythology of the Isle of Mann, my family’s connection to it, and my own personal memories of the Island. The mythology of the isle is closely tied to the God of the sea, Manannan. On how his protection and moods have influenced the unique culture that has grown on the island. Both personal heritage and heritage techniques heavily influenced the creation of this project, relying on the ethos’s of intentional sustainability, the use of local resources and reliance on the sea that has been intrinsic to much of the Isle of Mann and my own history. The materials used in this project are all sourced from within the UK, and the dye stuff used, apart from the indigo, are all indigenous to the British Isles. Rediscovering the emotional durability that cloth can have when used for a long and repeated time, as well as bringing back the practice of the user back into the means and knowledge of production. I believe that the future of textiles should realign and evolve within historic practices. By using renewable, local and natural resources that have a limited, but durable lifespan, we will be able to lessen the environmental impact that the use of plastics and throwaway culture has created over the past century.
