Hängrum: a biophilic response to urban density

Hängrum was developed as part of my Bachelor’s thesis on the topic “Reintegration of natural elements into everyday spaces.” In the theoretical section I examined the positive effects of nature on human well-being as well as the challenges and negative influences of our urban and modern lifestyle. Stress, increasing mental and physical health issues, sensory overload and living in confined spaces are examples of these pressures. Living space is increasingly becoming a luxury resource. Based on principles of biophilic design, this research formed the foundation for my design work. A key part of this research was the scientific investigation of nature’s influence on human perception and stress reduction. Fractal structures in particular have been shown to have a measurable calming effect on the human mind. These findings directly informed my design decisions and established a research based framework for the development of the project. Hängrum is a multifunctional wall installation that functions as a wardrobe and storage system when folded up. Fractal patterns, biomorphic forms and natural materials reference elements found in nature. When unfolded, Hängrum transforms into a hammock, a space associated with rest, relaxation, holidays and being outdoors. These qualities are often missing in urban everyday life. Additionally, Hängrum can be used as an extra guest bed or, with cushions, transformed into a couch alternative for multiple people. Sustainability was also a key consideration in the development of the product itself. Hängrum is made from oak wood, stainless steel and recycled paracord, combining durable and high quality materials. The design allows for easy disassembly, meaning all components can be separated without effort. This makes repair, reuse and recycling straightforward and ensures that the material cycles remain as intact as possible. The construction is permanently mounted to the wall using hinges integrated into a wooden frame. A rotatable hook at the top provides additional stability and enables easy folding. In its wall mounted state, the support legs are invisibly integrated into the organic wooden frame, eliminating the need for additional storage space, which is a key advantage for small apartments. The load bearing net is made of paracord, woven using different techniques into a three dimensional fractal structure. Conceptually, Hängrum is designed for the needs of urban living environments and is particularly suited for furnished residential complexes such as student housing or studio apartments. It creates a flexible retreat that combines functionality with a sense of connection to nature.
