Liv Bjorholm Lyhne

The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås

I am a designer with a strong affinity for knitwear. My universe is simplistic, soft, and understated, and I take pride in creating garments consciously – through careful material choices, a mindful design process, and a commitment to creating in a quality that will last for years to come. I often draw inspiration from heritage garments, the body’s interaction with clothing, and the challenge of reinterpreting traditional techniques. Shaped by Danish design tradition, I always aim to treat functional and aesthetic elements as equally important, considering them from the very beginning of the design process and integrating them throughout.

Selvedge: An Exploration of Tailored Tradition through Contemporary Knitwear This project explored how features and detailing of classic tailoring, could be integrated into the knit itself – by looking at traditionally woven garments and their construction. The collection consists of a total of 6 looks and look 2 of the collection is the one showcased in this entry, the trouser in the look is the main entry-piece. The look consists of developments on a traditional tuxedo trouser and on the cravate, a predecessor to the modern tie, seeking to suggest a contemporary take on classic tailoring, in its materiality and construction. My aim was not to knit a traditional suit. Rather, I wanted to play with suiting details that we inherently associate with classic ’dressed’ garments, in order to create elevated knitwear. I sought to find a balance allowing us to see it as ’just a garment’ before recognizing it as knitwear, whilst utilising the qualities that knitting, as a technique, offers. The whole collection is knitted as fully fashioned garments, meaning each garment produces little to no waste. The sustainability aspect of being able to create low waste garments, without having to compromise on form or the cut of the garments, was my main driver for choosing to do a collection of exclusively fully fashioned garments. No synthetic yarns were used in order to produce the garments as consciously as possible. Furthermore, I did not find that there was any need to use synthetic materials, as using natural materials thoughtfully meant they fulfilled all functions and purposes needed.
