My concept for the collection called fluttering is to express how key signifiers whether that be material, colour or design choices can shape and form identity. In particular, one of my key inspirations was from my recent trip to Hong Kong and the use of bamboo and rope in their infrastructure. From an outsider’s perspective this aspect of Hong Kong is interesting and is a key part of their identity. But for the people who live in Hong Kong, this architecture and infrastructure is such a normal part of their culture that they may not realise that this is an integral part of their cultural identity. One key motif seen across the collection is the use of butterflies as a symbolism of identity. Due to the butterfly’s outward facing eyes, a butterfly is unaware of their beauty which is only seen by others. I believe that this sentiment can be transferred into the idea of identity as especially having been overseas, what makes us who we are is so unique and special. This is why my collection is called fluttering, not only to represent the butterfly motif, but the word being a verb showing how our identity changes and is constant.
