Xiaoman Jiang

I am an illustration student from Shanghai, China, currently exploring the intersection of visual storytelling and queer theory. My work is rooted in a deep curiosity about identity, desire, and the ways in which we construct and perform ourselves in everyday life. Drawing from personal experience and cultural observation, I create narratives that challenge normative frameworks and invite viewers to imagine more fluid, inclusive ways of being. I see illustration not simply as image-making, but as a form of visual thinking, a way to ask questions that resist easy answers. My recent projects explore the representation of queer desire in everyday urban spaces, reframing banal scenes as sites of hidden meaning and possibility. I am also deeply invested in community engagement, and have collaborated with local arts organizations on zine-making workshops and public drawing events. I believe that illustration has a unique capacity to create empathy, especially when it centers experiences that are often marginalized or unseen. Through my work, I hope to contribute to a broader cultural conversation about identity, care, and the politics of visibility.
