Zoe Alvarez

Cornell University

My name is Zoe Alvarez, and I am current student at Cornell University. I am majoring in Fashion Design and Management in the College of Human Ecology with intended minors in Business and Human Development. As I continue to explore and experiment to find my style in design, I am drawn towards implementing technology and innovation in fashion. Currently, I am working on designing for different shapes, thinking more about the organic shapes, movement, and functionality. I find that it is important to think about the wearer first, and designing for everyone, regardless of their size, shape, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, race and more. I want to make people fall in love with their clothes and feel confident everyday, no matter the day, job, activity, or event. It is also important to me that I show and represent my culture, interests, and passion in my designs. Through bringing diverse ideas and backgrounds into our communities, our own thoughts can progress. Art and design are instruments of evolution, and I plan to use it to make a positive change

Manmade? An Extension of the Natural State

Category: Apparel

Competitions: Fashion Competition 2025

This piece investigates whether manmade structures can be considered an extension of nature’s beauty. It reflects a desire to harmonize with nature, drawing from architectural forms like curved buildings and stone pathways. Crafted from 100% cowhide leather scraps sourced from a NYC leather goods shop, each piece mimics the organic interlocking patterns of a stone pathway. This dress challenges whether manmade objects can enhance natural beauty, showcasing the beauty and durability of repurposing leather scraps into functional art. The jacket blends urban, boxy appeal with inspiration drawn from infrastructure, contrasting while integrating with the organic feel of the dress. Embracing the human form, it prompts reflection on our relationship with nature.
