ROSE BULALI

Istituto Marangoni: Fashion, Art and Design

I’m Rose Bulali, a 22-year-old fashion design student from Kenya. My work is rooted in sustainability and cultural storytelling, often using natural materials like banana fibre. Inspired by my Luhya heritage, I design with elements like soil, water, and plants to reflect a deep connection with nature. I believe in designing for longevity—focusing not only on how a garment is made but also how it’s cared for after purchase. Through my work, I aim to merge tradition with innovation and reimagine fashion as a tool for preserving both culture and the planet.

DESIGNING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH AFTERCARE

Category: Apparel

Competitions: Fashion Competition 2025

Designing sustainability through aftercare is the theme significantly inspired by banana fibre, the traditional cultural patterns from the Luhya community in my home country, Kenya, and other major natural elements of the earth, such as water. This apparel focuses not just on the ` now ’ sustainability, but also explores the long-term preservation of clothing in the fashion industry and how it affects the environment. It dives into the search on how to maintain fashion/apparel even after purchase and reduce pollution, such as when using chemical detergents, electrical energy, and water.

Working with our partners at Arts Thread to develop lifelong learning and career opportunities for students of fashion and design. Our partnership provides the opportunity to compete on a world stage, participate in industry led workshops, set up an outstanding portfolio and gain access to the resources that will kickstart careers in fashion and design.
