Rebeka Jázmin Baji

The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås

Textile Design BA / BFA

I am Rebeka Jázmin Baji, and I came from Hungary; as a little girl, I used to look at the Vogue magazine in my mom's closet. I was utterly blown away when I saw the pages of the Alice in Wonderland photo shoot. The clothes' colors and fabrics captivated me and set me off on my fashion and textile discovery journey. That was when I started thinking about fashion and textiles as if it were a fairytale, a fantasy about a metamorphosis: changing yourself and playing a part you want others to see. This impression inspired me to study Textile & Fashion Design. I also like to try myself in other areas of art; I experimented with interior design, graphic design, and many others.

Recently, the role of the home has changed, and it is challenging not only in time but also in space to separate rest from work. Wool’s therapeutic nature relieves our body and soul after a long, busy day. For my project, I made a digitally created prototype of my idea. I plan to make a chair of felted wool fiber and a bamboo rod or wood to bring my project to life. I would make the base structure out of wood or bamboo cane to make it as light as possible, and then I would wrap and weave it around and tie it with felted wool yarn. I want to add an extra function so that it can also be used as a swing. Having a double function: The swings invite you to contemplate -they give you a safe space and help you remember as they get in touch with more than one of your senses. I believe being in contact with such a material could also benefit everyday healthy life. Wool has a therapeutic effect, which, among other things, calms the individual; therefore, my project name is MAMA because my mother is the comforting wool for me.
