Introducing Sea to Silhouette, my take on a fascinator. These hats, typically worn at derbies, are rooted in appearance, symbolizing wealth. Part of this appearance is that these hats are extremely detailed, expensive, and labor- intensive but only worn once. Not only is this wasteful, but it is harmful to the environment. My design proposes a new way of making fascinators. I studied past designs to understand their key qualities and learned how to implement these with bioplastics derived from seafood industry waste. These bioplastics are usually too fragile to be seriously used as a textile, but for the limited wear that fascinators have, they are perfect. My design shows how you can acheive the same bold silhouettes without the expensive and environmentally harming processes used for traditional fascinators, reimagining these accessories as more than just a display of status, but rather an intentional, temporary expression.
