Estonian Academy of Arts
Textile Design BA / BFA
In 2021, I enrolled at the Estonian Academy of Arts to elevate my design skills to a new level. Before that, I had created my underwear brand, Donalabel, and wanted to deepen my understanding of textiles and expand my creative expression as a designer. I was inspired by a curiosity about the current state and innovation in the textile industry. I sought innovative approaches to fabric dyeing and printing and explored how the Academy supports young designers' education towards a greener and more sustainable future. I wanted to be part of the Estonian design landscape and stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the field. At the Academy, I experimented extensively with different techniques and found inspiration in every task. Our curriculum included diverse theoretical subjects that complemented practical studies in textiles. This holistic approach taught me to notice the uniqueness and beauty of materials and encouraged me to live with the material rather than just use it. My years at the Academy have made me more sensitive and reflective. My work reflects a freak folk aesthetic: this concept combines traditional folk elements and patterns with experimental, psychedelic, or avant-garde influences. Such design may include unexpected color combinations, bold shapes, and non-traditional materials, creating an eclectic and somewhat peculiar aesthetic. I have observed that as a designer, introspection, the use of natural materials, humor, and risk are essential to me - these are the cornerstones of my creativity.
