Freya Wiedemann

Falmouth University

Product Design BA / BFA

Freya is a Sustainable Product Designer and Maker. Growing up in Seattle, USA, near the beautiful nature of the Pacific Northwest, she spent a lot of time in the beautiful outdoors and has always been in awe of nature. During COVID, she spent one year at a Creative Sustainability program at Hallormsstadaskoli in Iceland (where her mother is from), learning how to live off of the land and utilize natures resources to live a more self sustaining lifestyle, in addition to learning more about her Icelandic heritage. During this year, she was able to learn many skills and dive deep into traditional methods of making and handcraft, including weaving, knitting, soap making, basketry, natural dyeing, and more. Her final project was a book made completely from industrial hemp, including ~80 pages of hemp paper, hemp hurd covers, and hemp twine to bind it all together. See some of her projects from this program here in her portfolio: https://freyawied.myportfolio.com/hallormsstadaskoli-creations This program inspired Freya to pursue studying design, and why not go even farther from home to the UK? She has spent the last three years studying Sustainable Product Design at Falmouth University in Cornwall. This time studying reinforced the importance of making processes, and she made it a mission to take advantage of the workshops as much as possible. This lead to further skills development in woodworking, fine metalworking, welding, CNC milling and 3D printing. Looking forward, Freya hopes to continue to develop making skills, and she has many ideas for projects to do next!
