Self-Introduction I am a sophomore currently majoring in Fashion Design. Throughout my professional studies, I have always regarded fashion as a flowing visual poetry that bridges tangible clothing craftsmanship and intangible natural aesthetics. Unlike conventional design creation that focuses on bright colors and fixed shapes, I am obsessed with the subtle, hazy and impermanent beauty hidden in nature, which inspires my original design theme for this competition — Smoke and Shadow. Nature possesses two of the most ethereal and romantic invisible elements: smoke and shadow. They are everywhere yet untouchable, changing endlessly with light, wind and time. Wispy smoke drifts gently in the air, soft and blurred, breaking rigid boundaries; shadows stretch and overlap with the shift of light, quiet and profound, outlining unique dimensional textures. This subtle interplay of emptiness and solidity, movement and stillness is the most delicate natural rhythm that I intend to interpret through costume design. In my series of works, I abandon overly gorgeous decorations and exaggerated tailoring. Instead, I focus on restoring the flowing sense of smoke and the layered beauty of shadows. I select translucent, soft and drapable fabrics to simulate the floating and diffusing texture of smoke, using gradient colors and vague hollowing techniques to present its hazy and agile state. Meanwhile, I use dark tone stitching, overlapping folds and light-shadow contrast cutting to recreate the overlapping and stretching layers of shadows on clothes. Every detail of the design aims to solidify the fleeting natural moments of smoke and shadow into wearable art. As a young design student, I always believe that fashion design is not limited to fixed forms, but an exploration of diverse beauty in nature. Most people tend to ignore these invisible natural landscapes, but I hope to discover the unique aesthetic value of trivial and fleeting natural scenes through my creation. This competition is a precious opportunity for me to express my design philosophy. I sincerely hope to let more people perceive the minimalist, ethereal and advanced beauty of nature behind smoke and shadow through my works, and I will keep exploring the integration of natural subtle elements and modern fashion design in my future study and creation.
