Chelsea Greenwell

Chelsea Greenwell's current research focuses on democratic design, often finding inspiration within the natural world for design solutions. Graduating with a Bachelors of Arts (Honours with Distinction) in 2015, Chelsea double majored in Fine Arts & English Language and Literature, Minoring in Spanish Language at the University of Windsor (Canada). Following this, in 2016, Chelsea was certified in Automotive Clay and Digital Sculpting from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, giving her the opportunity to work within the automotive design industry. Chelsea has since continued her education at the San Francisco based Academy of Art University, attaining a Masters’ of Industrial Design in 2024. Chelsea continues to work in the automotive design industry in the Greater Detroit area while pursuing projects and art installations she feels passionate about.

Imagine a future where we grew our own light… BioLumi is a project conceptualized in my final year of my Industrial Design Masters Degree. BioLumi intends to make safe and accessible lighting, harnessing the same technology designed by nature and intends to put it in the hands of those that need it most. BioLumi began as a fascination with glow in the dark materials and a desire to replicate that process naturally, biomimicking a chemical reaction that nature has already so beautifully designed and harness it as an alternative light source. Bio Lumi is inspired by wonder, simplified by nature & reimagined by science.  The need for a portable lighting solution is apparent: kerosene fumes are toxic; disposable batteries are a finite resource and difficult to recycle; solar cells are largely unaffordable. Bio Lumi was based upon the experience that portable lighting is inherently wasteful and often single-use but vital for many humanitarian endeavors, including providing necessary medical procedures in remote areas, disaster relief, and off-grid lighting in Developing Nations. This design supports public health and the relief/disaster aid workers without access to electricity. The goal is to provide inexpensive efficient lighting alternatives that function in a multitude of different environments, climates and circumstances.  This is biology, reimagined. This is Bio Lumi.

Our partnership provides the opportunity to compete on a world stage, participate in industry led workshops, set up an outstanding portfolio and gain access to the resources that will kickstart careers in fashion and design.
