Isabella Rivalta

Accademia Costume & Moda

Hello, my name is Isabella Rivalta and I am from Paris. I’ve always loved making things with my hands, using my manual skills to create objects that would end up on the mantle, and as I’ve grown older I learned how to express my creativity by virtue of it. Furthermore, I have consistently found myself attracted the the world of fashion, especially its elegance and confidence, and found ways to reveal myself and my individuality trough it. What captivated me the most were the accessories, intricate pieces that were an essential piece to someone’s everyday routine, and most importantly added character to the wearer. If I chose to follow this path, it’s because I want to create an object that someone can cherish, and that they also see as a necessary object to live their every day life.

This collection, “Plié.e.s” draws inspiration from origami, the Japanese art of folding paper. Origami is something playful, creative and intellectually stimulating. It turns a simple sheet of paper into something interesting and full of life. Its geometries are based on precise and geometric folds that end up creating a complex and dynamic structure. Although its structure is rigid, rigidity is not something I would conceptually associate with origami, even though it is based on precise folds, it is something light and meditative, therefore does not fit into a rigid structure. My research led me to identify an artist, Michele Reginaldi, who created paper sculptures that, however, ended up having a more organic shape than the original origami. The final result, therefore, is not rigid, nor was the process of creating the sculpture in question. The paper was in fact folded with little tension, allowing the final piece to be organic and appear light. It starts from the concept of origami, folding paper, but evolves creating forms no longer schematic, but soft and organic. Just like origami itself, the final collection transforms simplicity into something poetic and full of joy. In my project, these features become a visual language that guides the development of the form. The collection also features the visual effects of origami, with a border that recalls a sheet folded in two. Just like origami itself, the final collection seeks to transform simplicity into something poetic and full of joy. In this project, the inner child awakens.
