If you’ve heard of fast fashion, you’ll probably have a pretty good idea of what fast furniture is. Both things are mass produced, cheap and designed for quick consumption and disposal.

In both cases, what’s good for the pocket usually turns out bad for the environment.

Pieces of fast furniture are often made from materials including particleboard, plastic-based components, and synthetics. Because of this, they are likely to have a much shorter lifespan than those made of natural, more durable materials such as hardwood, leather, cotton and wool.

Fast furniture means more waste – shorter lifespans mean much more is thrown away. Most of it ends up in landfill and is not biodegradable. And its construction is usually environmentally damaging. Plastics are almost always derived from oil and their production causes more C02 emissions than if that oil was simply burned for fuel.

So, what can you as a consumer do to fight fast fashion?

  • Buy Secondhand: Shopping for pre-loved furniture reduces waste and extends the lifespan of quality pieces. Thrift stores, online marketplaces and antique shops are great places to start.
  • Choose Durable Materials: Go for furniture made from solid wood, metal or other sturdy materials. These pieces not only last longer but can often be repaired or refurbished.
  • Repair and Refurbish: Before discarding an old piece, consider whether it can be repaired, repainted or reupholstered. DIY projects can breathe new life into worn furniture.
  • Rent: Some companies now offer furniture rental options — perfect for temporary spaces or people who like regular changes of style.
  • Support Sustainable Brands: Find furniture companies committed to sustainable practices such as using reclaimed wood, non-toxic finishes and ethical labour.

Fast furniture’s appeal is understandable — it’s cheap, affordable, and trendy. But its costs to the environment are too high. By embracing sustainable alternatives, you can create a stylish, comfortable home while reducing waste, supporting ethical practices and investing in furniture that truly stands the test of time.
