Derbyshire-based artist Laura Ellen Bacon’s immersive art installation, ‘Into Being’, will take you on a sensory journey.
In the hushed grandeur of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s Chapel, near Wakefield, England, a remarkable transformation has taken place. The first thing that strikes you is the smell. A subtle, earthy fragrance of fresh willow permeates the air, transporting you from the everyday grind to a place of natural tranquillity.
‘Into Being’ was meticulously crafted by Laura over eight-weeks. She built it directly in the Chapel using sustainably sourced Somerset willow.
The sheer scale of the piece is breathtaking. Weave your way through the building and be enveloped by a dense, flowing structure that seems to defy gravity. Laura’s repetitive weaving process creates structures that climb three meters up the gallery walls, drawing you deeper into their intricate folds.
The Chapel at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a beautifully restored 18th-century building. Originally known as St. Bartholomew’s Chapel it is now a versatile and contemplative exhibition space. Beyond the central installation, several smaller woven works are on display, showcasing the ways this sustainable material can be used to create striking structural forms.
The balcony of the Chapel hosts a selection of Laura’s intricate drawings. These provide a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s mind, revealing the initial sparks of inspiration and the meticulous planning behind her large-scale works.
‘Into Being’ is more than just an exhibition. It’s an invitation to pause and reconnect with the natural world. It’s a reminder of the unexpected beauty and profound sensory experiences that can be created when skilled hands work in harmony with natural, sustainable materials.
